The Washington Square House, a 4 bedroom, 4 bath house accommodating up to 10 guests, is on Savannah's picturesque Washington Square 2 BLOCKS FROM RIVER STREET! This square, on Houston Street, is near the site of the old Trustees Garden. It was named for George Washington. For many years, until the mid-twentieth century, this square was the scene of the biggest New Year's Eve bonfires, many often taller than the houses around the square. The Seaman's House, operated by the Port Society to serve the needs of visiting seaman, is on the southwest side of the square.
This circa 1790 - 1810 Historic home has recently undergone an "Award Winning" Historic Restoration. After sitting vacant since 1992, the amazing miracle is that the house retained the vast majority of it's original details! The original stair case, heart pine floors, all doors and hardware, windows, plaster ceiling medallions, bead board wainscoting, fireplaces and mantels, etc, etc. The painstaking restoration was conducted by stringent guidelines laid out by the Department of Natural Resource in Washington D.C. These guidelines were followed in order to save the historic integrity of the home and its significant contribution to Savannah's Landmark Historic. All of this and 1.5 blocks to River Street!!!
